TYPES OF RECOVERED METALS

GEM-Ash focuses our knowledge of Waste-to-Energy incinerator ash processing on the recovery of ferrous and non-ferrous metals contained within the ash. We particularly focus on the smallest particle sizes to ensure maximum potential recovery of metals, including the precious metals contained within the ash stream.

REUSE OF RESIDUAL AGGREGATE

Our Advanced Metal Recovery (AMR) technology compliments incinerator ash mineral aggregate beneficial reuse by improving the material characteristics of the mineral aggregate for advance reuse opportunities.

OUR VISION

Jerry Goodwald and sons Christopher (C.J.) Goodwald and Matthew (Matt) Goodwald are the founders of GEM-Ash Processing LLC.

In 2013 the Goodwald family had a vision and worked together to develop a first of its kind, proprietary technology to mine and process combined incinerator ash from municipal solid waste (MSW). We developed a better solution that can process up to 130,000 short tons of combined incinerator ash annually using incinerator ash direct from the Waste-to-Energy (WTE) facility or mined from a landfill moncell.  Our technology can be successful with as little as 80,000 short tons annually. The process is totally mechanical, free of liquids and uses a smaller footprint to process incinerator ash.

GEM-Ash uses equipment to separate metals like steel, copper, glass and aluminum from the waste stream. In the not-too-recent past, non-ferrous metals like copper, steel, brass and aluminum – along with precious metals like gold and silver – couldn’t be separated from combined incinerator ash.

GEM-Ash started operations in Rosemount, MN on January 5, 2015. From the start of its operations GEM-Ash employees have actively researched, refined, and continually developed its processes. That pioneering spirit endures to this day, and we are proud of our innovative processes that provide solutions to WTE facilities looking for a green solution and alternatives to burying combined incinerator ash in landfills.

AWARD WINNING PROCESS

GEM-Ash is a Minnesota leader in municipal waste combustor ash recycling. We focus on maximizing ferrous and non-ferrous metals recovery. We are the first company in the state of Minnesota and the Midwest United States to deploy technology to recover non-ferrous metals from the smaller fractions of incinerator ash, where the precious metals reside. With the help of government agencies and researchers, our expectation is to not only separate metals from the incinerator ash but also recover, produce, and market the mineral aggregates that remain after processing. Today, our commercial operation in Rosemount, MN processes approximately 100,000 to 130,000 short tons of ash annually separating and recovering over a millions pounds of metals on a monthly basis.

In 2015 GEM-Ash was the proud recipient of the prestigious Green Project of the Year award given annually by the Recycling Association of Minnesota. The award  recognizes a special green project in Minnesota that demonstrates progressive leadership of an environmental issue with outstanding results. Winning companies demonstrate innovation through reducing waste, carbon footprint, water usage or other environmental issues important to Minnesota.
